Music Education Director Job Description

 

About Young Musicians of Alamance (YMA):

Young Musicians of Alamance (YMA) is 501c3 nonprofit organization that offers instrumental and general music education to elementary, middle, and high school students.  YMA follows the philosophy of El Sistema, which focuses on developing each child's sense of social emotional learning, musicianship, and sense of community inclusion. The majority of our students attend schools where 85% or more students qualify for free lunch. Students that qualify for free or reduced lunch receive free music lessons. If a student is not on free or reduced lunch, they may participate in the program for a fee.

Young Musicians of Alamance is looking for a part-time Music Education Director at 8 hours a week to support in developing string and general music curriculum, supervising teaching artists, and assist in overseeing the operations of the out-of-school time music program.

 

Program Duties:

  1. Develop instructional string & general music curriculum as guided by the El Sistema philosophy for students in each student group to be used by all staff. 

  2. Support Lead Teachers and Teaching Artists in the development of weekly lesson plans that follow the curriculum and El Sistema philosophy. Collect and review lesson plans weekly and suggest changes as needed.

  3. Distribute, collect, and safely maintain all student applications.

  4. Establish criteria for students’ placement into each instructional group. Assign students to the appropriate group, with input from Teaching Artists.

  5. Develop and distribute the student roster, teaching artist sign—in sheets, student sign-in sheets, and emergency contact lists.

  6. Maintain updated inventory lists for all instruments and accessories. Regularly inspect instruments for proper care and notify the Executive Director of any repair or replacement needs.

  7. Determine needs for instructional materials for each group.  Request purchases as needed.

  8. Attend rehearsals and performances including weekday and Saturday sessions.

  9. Distribute, collect, and coordinate the pick-up/drop-off of instruments and accessories.

  10. Assist in planning community engagement and performance opportunities.

  11. Assist in resolving possible disputes among staff, students and/or parents.

 

                                                                                                                                                                      

Teaching Artist Supervision:

  1. Oversee and support the program’s Lead Teachers and Teaching Artists. 

  2. Assist in conducting Lead Teacher and Teaching Artist performance reviews.

  3. Occasionally co-lead staff meetings and trainings.

  4. Schedule, place, and assign teaching artist staff to the appropriate groups monthly.

  5. Substitute for Teaching Artists when needed, as possible.

  6. Inform the Executive Director of any recommended changes in music staff personnel, including hiring or termination, and any projected needs for additional teachers.

  7. Assist in developing substitute a teacher list as well as recruiting and interviewing new hires when appropriate.

 

Additional Skills:

  • Must have a knowledge of teaching and playing string instruments with preference for violin or viola.

  • Communicate in an effective and timely fashion. 

  • Facilitate conflict resolution with care.

  • Have a passion for music education and working with children.

  • Fluency in Spanish would be a huge plus!

  • Previous knowledge of El Sistema is preferred. Reference books and on-line materials about El Sistema are available for those not familiar.

 

Additional Job Insights:

  • Pay rate: $20-25/hr depending on experience and education.

  • Hourly requirements: 8 hours / week

  • Remote work available

  • Will have the month of July off as well as some weeks in June and August.
